The PFFA Executive Board attended the IAFF/OSFFC Education Seminar January 12-14, 2014 in Eugene, Oregon. This is an annual event put on by the Oregon State Fire Fighters Council (OSFFC) to educate union leaders across Oregon. Union leaders were educated on current issues including 2014 ballot measures, health care changes, PERS updates, Oregon legislature, IAFF issues, firefighters posting on social media and given an overview of the history of the IAFF and OSFFC. These updates were giving by leaders in our state council, the IAFF, attorneys representing our members and the Keep Oregon Working campaign. In addition to all these updates the executive team attended several 2-hour workshops to further understand key responsibilities of our union.
Workshops attended by Executive Board:
- Overview of Membership Services
- Discipline - Your Rights and Responsibilities as a Union Officer
- Duty of Fair Representation
- Intro to Public Relations
- Media and Messaging Strategies
- Crisis Communication
These training opportunities are crucial to the development of the Executive Board. They give new members tools to immediately get to work and further educate experienced union officers. Many of the topics discussed at this seminar will be put into action immediately. If you have any questions on topics discussed at this seminar, please contact your District Representative or any of your union leaders.
