Portland Firefighters serve you to raise money for MDA
The Portland Firefighters Association would like to invite the public to join us this coming Thursday, March 14 for our 7th annual Firefighter Serve Day at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery at 206 SW Morrison in downtown Portland. Firefighters will be paired up with serving staff at the restaurant selling shamrocks to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Firefighters will be working two shifts on Thursday, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The tradition of firefighters raising money for MDA started in 1953 when firefighter George Graney of South Boston rounded up a volunteer force of firefighters to raise money to assist a childhood friend with two sons that were afflicted with muscular dystrophy. Firefighter Graney, also a member of the International Association of Firefighters, quickly recognized the potential of firefighters and their excellent image in the community and approached both the IAFF and MDA the following year to propose a formal bond between the two organizations. A relationship was born and locals from around the world have since raised money annually for MDA and have come to emerge as the single largest sponsor. The money raised by the IAFF goes directly to MDA and is used for research and treatments to prolong children's lives.
Locally, the majority of the money raised is used to sponsor children to attend the annual MDA summer camp held at Camp Arrah Wanna in Welches, Oregon. With the assistance of Gresham Firefighters Local 1062, The Firefighter Serving Day along with two other fundraisers held at Rock Bottom Brewery raised over $7000 last year. We are on track to beat that record this year and with your support we can make this happen!
We ask that you please join us this Thursday for some good food, smiles, and a great cause...and of course your local firefighters in uniform at one of Portland's favorite eateries!
